Soil Stabilization/Treatability

soil Stabilization/Treatability Testing

Timely Engineering Soil Tests, LLC., with the cooperation of Remedius, LLC., have the joint experience and knowledge of environmental research, remedial technologies, and regulatory issues. We have the expertise and experience to assess the efficacy of most chemical and physical processes that change a waste's characteristics, such as making it less toxic or reducing the receptors' exposure to the toxic compounds of waste.  Some of the treatment technologies we are qualified to assess are:

  • Solidification and stabilization
  • Permeable reactive barriersOxidation and reduction processes
  • Adsorption processes (e.g., activated carbon)
  • Desorption processes (e.g., evaporation)
  • Precipitation processes

T.E.S.T. performs bench-scale laboratory tests that are designed to provide the data needed to evaluate and support the design of a remedy.  T.E.S.T. has significant experience of laboratory testing during in-situ stabilization/solidification (ISS) construction quality assurance testing. ISS is a treatment process that mixes contaminated soils with cement, water, and other reagents to solidify the contaminants; this treatment blocks the movement of contaminants into surface water, groundwater, and other environmental surfaces.

During laboratory testing, T.E.S.T. uses standard ASTM methods, as well as in-house developed procedures and methods. These in-house developed procedures and methods are site-specific and allow for most economical and environmentally vigorous soil/grout mixes.

Following are some ASTM standards are used during bench scale and CQA testing:

  • ASTM D 559: Test Methods for Wetting and Drying Tests of Compacted Soil-Cement Mixtures
  • ASTM D 560: Test Methods for Freezing and Thawing Tests of Compacted Soil-Cement Mixtures
  • ASTM D 1632: Practice for Making and Curing Soil-Cement Test Samples in Laboratory
  • ASTM D 1633: Standard Test Methods for Compressive Strength of Molded Soil-Cement Cylinders
  • ASTM D 2166: Standard Test Method for Unconfined Compressive Strength of Cohesive Soil
  • ASTM D 5084: Standard Test Methods for Measurement of Hydraulic Conductivity of Saturated Porous Materials Using a Flexible Wall Permeater
  • ASTM D 4842: Standard Test Method for Determining the Resistance of Solid Wastes to Freezing and Thawing
  • ASTM D 4843: Standard Test Method for Wetting and Drying Test of Solid Wastes
